A message from MEAM at 15…

December 07, 2024

This year, MEAM marks 15 years of supporting local areas and national policymakers to transform services, systems and policy for people facing multiple disadvantage.

In that time, the MEAM Approach network has grown to 50 local areas. We are inspired daily by their work and the positive impact they are having on local systems and people’s lives. We have been proud to help shape and support the landmark investment programmes of Fulfilling Lives and Changing Futures.

As we mark this point in time, we have been reflecting on what we have learnt and what the future holds for MEAM and for tackling multiple disadvantage.

New learning report:

Today, we launch our new report Transforming services and systems for people experiencing multiple disadvantage, exploring 15 things we have learnt from MEAM Approach areas about how to tackle multiple disadvantage. We offer it as a resource and conversation-starter for them, for us, and for other areas interested in progressing this vital work. We would be delighted to hear your feedback.

MEAM’s future:

As we look towards the future, we see both the significant progress made on how to tackle multiple disadvantage and also the persistent challenges that remain. We are united in our assessment that bold cross-sector and cross-organisational collaboration will continue to be needed, local and nationally.  We intend to position MEAM and our organisations in the most effective way possible to support that work in the years ahead.

From 1 January 2025, MEAM will operate as a charity with Homeless Link, Clinks, Collective Voice and Mind leaders on the board. We will also recruit a set of additional trustees to bring in further lived experience, commissioning and commercial expertise. MEAM will continue to be led by Oliver Hilbery and the current staff team and as five organisations we will continue to collaborate in the delivery of our work. Liv Corbishley, who has chaired MEAM through this transition stage, will step down next year and a new Chair will be recruited (please follow for details).

National Multiple Disadvantage Summit – Save the date

We are delighted to confirm that the National Multiple Disadvantage Summit is returning on 13 May 2025. Last year we welcomed more than 250 leaders from across the country committed to tackling multiple disadvantage, for a bold and frank discussion about the reality of system change. This year’s event promises to be another energising gathering. Booking is now open.

The next phase

As we reflect on 15 years, we want to thank our funders, partners and the local areas we have had the privilege of working alongside. We know that the current environment is a challenging one for people, organisations and places. However, we also see many signs of hope, optimism and determination for change.

As we move into this next phase, we look forward to working with you all – providers, policymakers, commissioners, people with lived experience, funders and businesses – as we seek to ensure that everyone experiencing multiple disadvantage can live a fulfilling and rewarding life, as defined by them.
