Understanding Multiple Disadvantage

Overview

This training will introduce you to the concept of multiple disadvantage and explore the subject as a systemic issue. You will reflect on your local area’s approaches to multiple disadvantage while also considering a range of concepts, terminology and definitions. We’ll examine intersectionality, demographics, and systems journeys through to systemic oppression and how this can impact on communities.

Our trainers will introduce you to MEAM’s frameworks and tools, so that you are equipped to influence change. Our training also considers the vital roles that culture and values play, along with systems thinking, collaboration and partnership working.

We also emphasise best practice approaches such as incorporating lived experience, relationship building and recognising collective strengths.

Who is this training for?

This introductory course is for anyone working with people facing multiple, overlapping challenges, such as homelessness, substance misuse, mental ill health and contact with the criminal justice system, who wants to understand these issues as a connected, systemic problem rather than separate ones. It is also suitable for people with no knowledge of multiple disadvantage and would like to learn more.

If you’re not sure if this training is right for you, contact the team on training@meam.org.uk
